During last week’s blizzards, one Colorado mountain town’s diesel supply — used to fuel snowplows and other heavy equipment — was running on empty. Dillon Town Manager Nathan Johnson said last week that the Public Works Department’s diesel tank ran so low during the snowstorm that the town had to turn to nearby gas stations to refuel. Summit Fire & EMS has an agreement to fuel up its vehicles at the Dillon Public Works diesel tank, it had other government resources to fall back on when the town ran out. The fire protection district had another diesel source at the County Commons that it could tap into.Whereas prices at commercial gas stations include a gas tax, government agencies don’t pay that tax on fuel, so the fire district prefers to use government fuel sources.
